Today's Deep Thought

  • The wise man can pick up a grain of sand and envision a whole universe. But the stupid man will just lie down on some seaweed and roll around until he's completely draped in it. Then he'll stand up and go, "Hey, I'm Vine Man."

Our future generation

man we’re in trouble…

In case you missed that: “I personally believe that U.S. Americans are unable to do so because, uh, some … people out there in our nation don’t have maps and uh, I believe that our, ah, education like such as in South Africa, and, uh, the Iraq, everywhere like such as, and I believe that they should, uh, our education over here in the U.S. should help the U.S., or should help South Africa, it should help the Iraq and the Asian countries so we will be able to build up our future, for our children.”

Huh? Let’s get this straight: Many Americans — that is, U.S. Americans — can’t locate their country on a map because, well, they don’t have maps. That’s a weird start, but OK. Maybe.

Now, the tough part: What the heck does the rest of her answer mean? What do South Africa and “the” Iraq have to do with anything? And why should U.S. education help said countries?

About the only thing that makes sense — and only in the world of beauty pageantry, where contestants aren’t really bred to answer skill-testing questions — is Ms. Upton’s belief (strong, I’m sure) that U.S. education should help … the U.S. For those out there who scoff at the idea of beauty pageants, here’s your cue to point and laugh. Ha ha. Dumb blonde, All beauty, no brains. Et cetera.
